Apprehensive of Madhuri Dixit

After writing the phenomenal hockey film, Chak De India writer Jaideep Sahni is back with his next film for Yash Raj - the Madhuri Dixit starrer Aaja Nachle . Jaideep who along with the cast and the crew is busy promoting the film, took some time off to chat up with us about Aaja Nachle and his chance in a lifetime to work with the dancing diva Madhuri Dixit.

The writer is still reeling with the success of Chak De India and is all praise of the great team work that everyone put in for the film. “It is our job to write the film well. The success of the film wholly depends on the audience. We were all involved in the film and always work as a team on every film. When I was working on the script Aditya and Shimit were my backup and when Shimit was working myself and Adi were his backup. It’s the team effort which counts.”

Well hopefully the same team effort will pay off for his next film Aaja Nachle too. At least it helped in convincing Madhuri for the role. “Aditya told Madhuri the story and she was very excited. When Madhuri came down I was done with the scripting of the film. I was a little apprehensive while reading the script to her as there was a risk. What if while narrating the script she would turn to Adi and say ‘don’t tell me you called me for this’ But nothing of that sort happened and she really liked the script and was up for it.”

So after convincing Madhuri about the script we asked him to tell us about the story of the film “Aditya had a basic idea which we worked on. Madhuri plays Dia who grows up in a small town in India. She learns the craft of dancing and singing at a theatre called Ajanta in the same town. But soon she moves abroad and makes a big name for herself. Around that time she hears that Ajanta the theatre where she had learnt the art is going to shut down because the town folks do not have any inclination to song or dance as they feel it’s a worthless pursuit. Dia soon comes down to her town as she wants to revive Ajanta and stop them from closing it down. For which she requires the support of the entire town and gets them involved in the art of song and dance. The story is about her mission to revive the theatre.”

As a writer, Jaideep is not just involved with writing the screenplay but has also penned lyrics for some songs in the film. So we asked him to tell us a bit about the songs which are doing the rounds ‘Show Me Your Jalwa’ “In the song Madhuri is asking the people to know oneself. It’s about knowing your niche. Everyone is good at doing something. And so Madhuri is asking everyone what is special about them. The song is a tribute to the homemakers and the common man of India.”

With writing some interesting lyrics for Aaja Nachle , Jaideep has also penned down lyrics for Yash Raj’s animation flick Roadside Romeo . So how different was it for the writer to write songs for an animation film? “It has been great fun to work on this film. It’s like a legal opportunity for the child in me to go nuts. It was fun to imagine animals dance and sing.”

Apart from Yash Raj we don’t see Jaideep writing for any other director, so is he under some contract with Yash Raj? “I have a screenwriting deal with Yash Raj but I can write lyrics for anyone I want, like I did for Johnny Gaddar or Khosla Ka Ghosla .”
