Big B's late-night SMS to media

After 18 days of stoic silence, Amitabh Bachchan has at last sent word on his condition. A late-night SMS from the star, in reply to a message from a reporter, read, “I am feeling better. Will stay at the hospital for a few more days.”

Up to then, there was much speculation that Bachchan would leave Lilavati some time during the night. Journalists and fans continued their vigil outside Lilavati Hospital, apprehending his discharge. “Ab niklega... pakki khabar hai,” said one journalist.

Even the passersby took the time to peek inside the hospital compound, hoping to catch a glimpse of Bachchan leaving. Said a fourth standard student, “I came to see if Bachchan uncle would finally come out. I come here every day to check on uncle.”

But then came the SMS, and the animated crowd uttered a collective groan.

Meanwhile, hospital sources said Bahchan was perfectly fine, and could leave any time he wanted. Celebrities who visited him yesterday included Sachin Tendulkar, Saif Ali Khan and girlfriend Hubby Roza, and actress Shefali Chhaya.
